Love Nest's Story

Love Nest Plaque
Tucked away in the middle of North Carolina, there is a bronze plaque marking the name of a home called LOVE NEST. The name has origins that date back to the early 1900's and are kept alive by one couple who has ties to this story. Bill and Jean have kept this name going strong by naming any property thereafter LOVE NEST (insert roman numeral) II, III, VI, and so on. They are currently on number 9 which is why a plaque was recently made for them. Below is a brief history of this beloved home and the notorious name that it was given, as told by Bill and Jean:
William Oliver Huske and Jean Ashcraft purchased a 4 lot property in Fayetteville, NC after marrying in 1922. The lot had been owned by a well know real estate investor. The newly married Huske couple decided to build a two bedroom "honeymoon house" and called it: LOVE NEST.

William Huske became a successful hardware store owner who was well known throughout the area. So much so, that the lock and dam #3 on the Cape Fear river that flows through Fayetteville was named after William. His wife Jean was a school teacher and was very involved in their local church. They had 3 daughters, all of whom were raised in the LOVE NEST home.

One of those daughters, Patricia, married a pharmacist who was a personal friend of my wife and I. Together, him and Patricia moved into LOVE NEST. They raised a son and lived there for many years until LOVE NEST became a rental home. At one time it was rented by a General in the US Army. In 1971 the house went up for sale and I (Bill) had just returned from a tour in Vietnam and decided to purchase the home.

The house and lots were altered several times over the years including by my wife and I. We decided to keep the original name of the house alive. We did this by naming everything we later purchased in which we could sleep LOVE NEST with a Roman numeral. This included two motor homes, four boats and two additional homes.

We kept the original LOVE NEST home as a rental property after we moved into our first new home in 1994. Renters accidentally burned LOVE NEST down in 2013 and we used the insurance money and savings to build our current home, LOVE NEST IX. We still own the LOVE NEST site and are discussing developing it. It will, of course, retain its original LOVE NEST name.
